Who Are We?
Michigan Social Workers for Palestine is a growing collective of social workers from across the state of Michigan working for Palestinian self-determination and liberation. We are social workers in a variety of fields and professions, from clinical counseling and child welfare, to education and research, community organizing and politics. We are led by social workers who are Palestinian, Black, Latinx, Queer, Jewish, and who hold other marginalized identities.
What Is Our Goal?
We need a Ceasefire in Gaza, an end to unconditional US military aid to Israel, and humanitarian aid to be let into Gaza at the levels recommended by the UN. We are dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of Palestinians using our unique social work skills around advocacy and organizing, education, facilitation and negotiation.
In partnership with other groups and organizations across the state, country and internationally we work to promote social justice and human rights and empower all communities to advocate for Palestinian liberation through advocacy, education and mutual aid.
Why Social Workers?
Our social work values and ethics call on us to be politically engaged and to advocate for socially just policies. We are also called to protect human life and honor the dignity of each person. Because of this we must demand our elected leaders stand for just and human centered policy including; the urgent need for complete ceasefire and full restitution and increase of humanitarian assistance to Palestine. After the ceasefire, we continue to work for full Palestinian self-determination and the right to return.
As social workers we must also call for an end to the ongoing and unacceptable amount of military funding going to Israel. Since Israel’s creation in 1948, the United States has given Israel 124 billion dollars in military aid. In 2023, Congress approved over 14.5 billion. We know that this money is needed for the communities that we work in everyday. We demand our elected officials stop funding the apartheid state of Israel and reinvest tax dollars into restoring and growing communities in the U.S.

Our Code of Ethics & Why Palestine Matter
“The NASW Code of Ethics offers a set of values, principles and standards to guide decision-making and everyday professional conduct of social workers. It is relevant to all social workers and social work students regardless of their specific functions or settings.” - NASW Code of Ethics
Some relevant points in the Code of Ethics include:
Preamble: “Social workers are sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity and strive to end discrimination, oppression, poverty, and other forms of social injustice… Social workers also seek to promote the responsiveness of organizations, communities, and other social institutions to individuals’ needs and social problems.” We believe this piece of the CoE calls on us to hold our public institutions, including the NASW itself as well as our government and elected officials accountable to the interests of their constituents, as well humanitarian causes such as the relentless bombing and attacks currently taking place in Gaza.
Section 6 - Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to the Broader Society:
6.01: “Social workers should advocate for living conditions conducive to the fulfillment of basic human needs and should promote social, economic, political, and cultural values and institutions that are compatible with the realization of social justice.
6.02: Social workers should facilitate informed participation by the public in shaping social policies and institutions.”
6.04: “Social workers should engage in social and political action… and should be aware of the impact of the political arena on practice and should advocate for changes in policy and legislation to improve social conditions to meet basic human needs and promote social justice.”
